We began the interior design concept for the 1 Hotel Melbourne by grounding ourselves in the site's natural and industrial context. Its proximity to the Yarra River and the raw, industrial structure of the building inspired a palette of rugged, honest materials - evoking the character of cargo ships and an industrial heritage.

In the lobby, the interior design is deeply informed by the architecture of the space. The shell evokes an industrial warehouse aesthetic, with lofty, open ceilings supported by rust-toned red beams that run rhythmically throughout. Finishes are purposefully raw, exposed concrete and solid, unrefined woods, setting a tone of authenticity and simplicity.

The restaurant design embraces an organic sensibility, both in form and materiality, creating a space that feels warm, tactile, and intentionally understated. A handcrafted terracotta tile floor provides a rich, grounding
foundation, its irregularity and warmth setting the tone for the entire space. This is complemented by softly textured concrete walls and timber-beamed ceilings, which lend a sense of enclosure and intimacy within the lower, more compressed volume of the architectural shell.

In the guestrooms we embraced a quieter, more contemplative palette—one that fosters a sense of calm and ease from the moment you enter. Pale ivory linens were used generously across the beds and sofas, creating a light, airy foundation that feels soft and inviting. The color story remains understated throughout,
allowing texture and materiality to define the space rather than bold color or contrast. All of the furniture and rugs were custom designed specifically for the rooms, reinforcing a sense of cohesion and intentionality.

We continued this approach to texture and materiality throughout—using solid oak furniture frames made from weathered and reclaimed timber, selected for their rich grain and aged character. Upholstery in warmingmohairs, boucle, and other textured fabrics adds further depth, helping to create a space that feels both intimate and refined.
