The Bellevue, originally founded in 1904 by George C. Boldt, stands as a tribute to Philadelphia's heritage.

With a 120-year legacy, it holds countless cherished memories for Philadelphians within its walls, cementing its status as a beloved downtown landmark. The project aimed to meticulously restore the property, preserving its original architectural elements and elevating it for a new era.

Timeless features remain, including bas-relief columns, original mosaic flooring, coffered plaster ceilings, hand-painted murals, and intricate boiserie wall panels. Contemporary touches complement its French Renaissance architecture, while restored crown moldings and marble bathrooms add sophistication. Rich materials like velvet and hand-blown glass evoke the opulence of its past and were created bespoke for the lobby space.

For the reception desk, we designed this bespoke piece to incorporate large scale sconces and bring in a warm glow of lit glass cabinet doors. We wanted to highlight the history of the property and sought to use the reception desk to hold tasseled keys for the rooms to bring back the old school charm of the hotel. The reception desk’s brass is aged to feel as if it’s always been there with a deep burgundy marble stone top to highlight the flooring below.

We used a rich color palette throughout the lobby, drawing on the warm ochre and mustards found in the original tile mosaics to inform the fabric scheme throughout. We selected secondary colors, a deep teal and burgundy, to highlight the mustard. Where we could not salvage the original flooring, we created a burgundy and white marble flooring to frame seating groups and at the reception desk to create a complimentary yet unique floor.
